Bed adhesion and warping

Symptom: the model lifts at the corners or won't stick.

  • Level the bed (or run auto-leveling) and set the correct Z-offset.
  • Clean the plate with IPA — grease kills adhesion.
  • Add a brim for figures with small footprints.
  • PLA: bed ~55–60°C. Avoid drafts near the printer.

Stringing and blobs

Symptom: thin hairs or zits across the model.

  • Dry your filament — wet PLA strings badly.
  • Tune retraction distance and speed.
  • Lower the nozzle temperature by 5–10°C.

Failed or fused supports

Symptom: supports collapse mid-print or weld to the model.

  • Use tree/organic supports for figures — cleaner removal.
  • Raise the support Z-distance slightly so they snap off.
  • Reorient the model so overhangs (wings, arms) need fewer supports — see our orientation guide.

Layer shifts

Symptom: the print suddenly offsets sideways.

  • Reduce print speed and acceleration for tall figures.
  • Check belts tension and that nothing is knocking the model.

Lost or mushy detail

Symptom: faces and fine points look soft.

  • Lower layer height to 0.12 mm.
  • Print bigger — below ~50 mm FDM loses fine features; use resin for small figures.
  • Ensure adequate cooling on PLA for crisp overhangs.
Rule of thumb: change one setting at a time and re-test with a small figure. Chasing three variables at once just hides which one mattered.

A calm way to debug a failure

When a print fails, resist changing five settings at once. Note where it failed — first layer, mid-print, a specific overhang — because location points straight at the cause. First-layer problems are adhesion or Z-offset; mid-print shifts are mechanical; rough overhangs are cooling or support. Change one variable, reprint a small test, and you'll actually learn what fixed it.

Prevention beats troubleshooting

  • Keep filament dry — a sealed box with desiccant prevents most stringing and popping.
  • Clean the build plate with IPA regularly; skin oils quietly ruin adhesion.
  • Re-level after moving the printer or swapping the plate.
  • Test new files at small scale before committing hours of print time.
