The single biggest lever for clean figures isn't your printer, it's how you orient the model and set supports. Here's how to get smooth faces and easy support removal.

Two people can print the same Charizard file and get wildly different results. The difference is usually orientation and supports — the parts of slicing most beginners rush. Slow down here and everything improves.

Why orientation matters

Orientation decides three things: which surfaces are smooth (up-facing surfaces look best), where supports touch (and therefore where scars appear), and how strong the print is. Get it right and you barely need to sand.

Orienting Pokemon figures

  • Keep the face support-free. Angle the model so no supports land on the face — scars there are the hardest to hide.
  • Flat base down for stable, upright chibi figures — minimal supports needed.
  • Winged/dynamic poses (Charizard, Lugia): tilt 20–45° so wings self-support more and supports reach non-visible areas.

Key support settings (FDM)

  • Overhang threshold: ~50° is a good default.
  • Z-distance: raise slightly so supports snap off without tearing the surface.
  • Support interface: enable a dense interface layer for a smoother underside.

Resin specifics

On resin, angle the model 30–45° (never flat), keep supports off the face, hollow larger models and add drain holes so uncured resin escapes. Heavier support density than FDM, but thinner tips for clean removal.

Test print: before committing a whole pack, print one figure with your orientation and support profile. Dial it in once, reuse it forever.

Removing supports without damage

Let FDM prints cool fully before removing supports — warm plastic tears. Use flush cutters to snip contact points rather than yanking, and pull toward the model, not away, to avoid lifting a layer. For stubborn spots, a hobby knife cleans the nub, then a touch of sandpaper blends it. On resin, remove supports while the print is still slightly flexible (just after washing, before final cure) for the cleanest snap.

Hiding the marks that remain

Even perfect supports leave small witness marks. Plan for them: orient so those marks land on the back or underside, where nobody looks. Anything still visible on a display surface is easily hidden with a dab of filler and a light sand before priming. A minute of cleanup turns a printed part into a finished one.
