A Beginner's Guide to 3D Printing STL Files

An STL is a 3D model: a mesh of triangles describing a shape. Your printer can't read it directly — it needs instructions. That's what a slicer is for.
The pipeline, end to end
- Download the STL (or 3MF) file.
- Slice it: software converts the model into layers and machine instructions (G-code).
- Print: the machine builds the object layer by layer.
- Finish: remove supports, optionally sand, prime and paint.
Slicing basics you can't skip
Install a slicer (Bambu Studio, Orca, or PrusaSlicer — all free). Load your STL, then set a few things:
- Layer height: 0.2 mm for speed, 0.12 mm for detailed figures.
- Supports: on for overhangs (wings, arms). Tree supports remove more cleanly.
- Bed adhesion: add a brim if the model has a small footprint.
Hit slice, preview the layers, then send it to the printer via USB, SD card or network.
Your first Pokemon print
Grab a forgiving model — a chibi starter from our bundle — slice at 0.16 mm with tree supports, and print. When it's done, snap off the supports with flush cutters. That's it. You made a thing.

What to expect in your first week
Your first few prints may fail, and that's completely normal — every maker starts there. The usual culprits are a bed that isn't level and a wrong Z-offset, both quick fixes. Print small, cheap test models while you learn, and change only one setting at a time so you can tell what actually helped.

What software do I need to print an STL?
A slicer such as Bambu Studio, Orca Slicer or PrusaSlicer. They're free and convert the STL into instructions your printer understands.
Do I need to repair STL files before printing?
Usually no - well-made files are print-ready. If a slicer warns about a non-manifold mesh, most slicers can auto-repair minor issues.
What's the easiest Pokemon to print first?
A big, rounded, flat-bottomed figure like Snorlax or a chibi starter. They need minimal supports and are very forgiving.
