How to Scale and Resize STL Files the Right Way
Bigger, smaller, or a matching set? Scaling sounds trivial but a few gotchas can ruin a print. Here's how to resize figures without losing detail or strength.
Every slicer can resize a model in seconds, but scaling well is the difference between a crisp figure and a blobby one. Here's how to do it right.

In your slicer, select the model and use the scale tool. Keep uniform scaling (lock proportions) on unless you deliberately want to stretch. Enter a percentage or a target height in millimetres.
Scaling down (the risky direction)
Shrinking loses detail fast. On FDM, features thinner than the nozzle width (0.4 mm) simply vanish — ears, flames, teeth. Below about 50 mm tall, many figures start to look mushy on FDM. If you need small, switch to resin.
Scaling up
Scaling up is safer for detail but watch print time, material use and bed size. Very large prints may need higher infill and more walls for strength, and can be split into parts and glued.
Matching a set
For a cohesive shelf, pick one target height and scale every figure to it, rather than a fixed percentage — models come at different native sizes. A consistent height makes a collection look intentional.
After you scale
Re-check supports and orientation after scaling — overhangs and contact areas change with size. Re-slice and preview before printing.
Scaling and strength
Scaling changes more than size. A model scaled up but left at the same wall count and infill can feel hollow and fragile, so add a perimeter or two and a little infill for large prints. Scaled-down parts get relatively stronger but lose fine features, and thin protrusions like tails or ears can drop below printable thickness — check them in the slicer's preview before committing.
Splitting oversized models
Want a figure bigger than your build plate? Use your slicer's cut tool to split it into parts, print each flat-side-down for strength and finish, then glue with cyanoacrylate (super glue) and fill the seam. Splitting also lets you orient each piece for its best surface, often giving a better result than printing the whole thing at once.
